Hyperloop One is reinventing transportation to eliminate barriers of time and distance by using Hyperloop transport to move cargo and passengers immediately, safely, efficiently, and sustainably.

We design, develop, build and test the technology and hardware to make Hyperloop a reality.

Materials Science Engineer at Hyperloop One

As a Materials Science Engineer, you will perform materials characterization and analytical tests, generate technical reports and presentations to support advanced material development and improved device fabrication goals. Develop methods for characterization of new materials, evaluate new test protocols, characterization equipment and testing instruments with regard to enabling better materials understanding. As part of materials characterization team, you will be expected to review and interpret data from your tests or tests conducted by other analysts and coordinate the use of multiple techniques, to drive better understanding of the correlation between materials properties and performance in a system. You will work with other designers and engineers at Hyperloop One as a subject matter expert for hardware development topics including manufacturability, materials selection and fabrication.

Organize and carry out physical/chemical characterization, failure analysis, and device fabrication tasks to support the production, engineering and R&D departments.

Acquire, interpret analytical data and prepare reports using materials characterization techniques including: optical techniques, SEM, FTIR, DSC, TGA, DMA, and Dilatometry.

Prepare and maintain standard operation procedures, validate methods and equipment, develop and implement new characterization test protocols.

Determine best techniques and most effective characterization paths to attain the desired information.

Train, guide and define tasks for technicians to facilitate work at high-standards.

Drive the relationship with vendors/suppliers for service and maintenance of the existing equipment and provide recommendations for equipment improvements and new capabilities.

Ensure compliance for Environmental Health and Safety guidelines and promote improvements to enhance efficiency and safety in the laboratories and other work areas.

Field multiple concurrent projects on tight timelines.

Collaborate with project teams to identify prototyping needs and opportunities.

Design and fabricate hardware solutions in a wide variety of materials and processes.

Support and develop new fabrication capabilities for Hyperloop-One.

Use materials expertise to help select materials and specify testing for materials qualification.

Work with partners/vendors/internal teams to develop best-in-class materials for product teams.

Take hands-on ownership of laboratory and analytical equipment.

Choose the most appropriate prototyping method for allotted timeline and goals.

Bachelor's degree in a similar or adjacent field such as materials science, industrial design, chemistry, mechanical or aerospace engineering.

2-5 years of laboratory experience relating to materials characterization.

Understanding of key properties for a range of materials including ceramic, polymer, and metal.

Hands-on experience with materials characterization techniques including determination of appropriate technique to achieve desired information, and limitations of methods.

Experience in a broad range of fabrication techniques including digital and analog fabrication techniques, CNC, woodworking and metalworking.

Experience with material development and material science.

Proficient in multiple CAD packages (SolidWorks, Rhino, Alias, ProE, NX, Inventor).

Experience working at multiple stages in the product lifecycle.

Capable of influencing teams indirectly through timely, accurate and powerful analysis.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Experience

MS degree in Engineering or equivalent practical experience.

Experience in a technical/engineering role which focused on materials engineering, design, design validation, product development, field testing, failure analysis, reliability, or equivalent.

Experience in 2 of the following scientific instruments and/or disciplines: Electron Microscopy, Fracture Mechanics/Fractography, Finite Element Analysis, Computed Tomography X-Ray, Scanning Probe Microscopy, Thermal Analysis, Analytical Chemistry.

Expertise in mold design, resin casting, composites fabrication with experience in manufacturing processes (polymers, metals, composites, etc.).

Experience with thermo, statics, dynamics analysis.

Experience with design, development, and fabrication of complex aerospace grade structures and material systems.
